Finally! Follow-ups!

Well, we finally got follow-ups scheduled and taken care of for Dana. This has been such a long and difficult thing to accomplish. First, they told her to make an appointment 10 days after she left the ER. How is a poor young lady going to remember to make an appointment after being hit by a car and facing multiple injuries, including a concussion and head trauma?

We finally got that out of the way just to hit another snag. She wasn't sure which number in her MyChart to dial. She tried one, and they told her to contact her primary care physician, which she explained she didn't have one. They told her to just go to the ER then. We tried that route, and they did X-rays, but that was all.

Completely fed up, she pointed out a secondary number, and I called. YES! That was the number we needed, and we got her scheduled for follow ups. Nervously, she got ready, and she, my husband, and I took off to her first appointment to check her leg. He did a thorough analysis and found:

  • She has multiple small breaks and fractures on her foot, ankle, and leg.

  • She has multiple small areas where bone has been chipped off

  • Her distal fibula is broken beyond repair from a cast, and she will be scheduled for surgery on that.

We dropped our girl off and told her to get some sleep, as we had another follow-up the very next day. This one was for her arm. She was still sporting a splint on it, and it was wrapped to prevent movement from her elbow down. Off we went!

Upon arriving, just like before, everyone was very nice and accommodating. We loaded Dana into a wheelchair and went into the reception area, signed in, and waited. No time at all passed and she was called back. We rolled her into a large room, like the day before, and soon after someone came in to wheel her off for more X-rays.

When she was wheeled back in, it took no time at all for the Dr. to enter and shake our hands. He loaded up his new X-rays, made Dana move her fingers, felt for numbness, and finally told us the consensus:

  • She suffered a clean break on her radial bone. Completely broke in half.

  • She CAN be healed by a cast on that arm

  • No surgery needed!

They took the old and tattered wrap off. Ejected the splint. Told her to choose a color and casted her arm in a gorgeous purple and black cast. We finally got her taken care of, and now just need to schedule her for surgery. She did so good, and the biggest obstacle was getting blood drawn. Guys, I've never seen someone try to talk their way out of getting blood drawn or try to trick a phlebotomist into changing their mind about drawing their blood as our Dana 🤦‍♀️

So, that's our update for now, and she couldn't be healing any better, given the circumstances. Everyone in the community can be thanked for helping support and heal Dana. If not for the love and care of you all, well, I don't even want to think about it. Thank you to every single one of you. Together we can get this smart, talented, funny soul lifted up!
